Pursuant to the Stanford University policy, the Stanford-DOE lease, and the M&O contract, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory does not perform classified research. However, there may be operational or programmatic needs that require SLAC personnel to have a security clearance to access classified information. As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratory, requirements governing security clearances for access to classified information are contained in several DOE Safeguards and Security requirements, in particular within DOE Order 472.2, Personnel Security. DOE has granted approval for SLAC to maintain a security clearance program through the Stanford University-DOE contract. SLAC is considered a “non-possessing facility” meaning the Laboratory doesn’t physically possess classified information or special nuclear materials in quantities greater than Category IV and attractiveness Level C per DOE Order 474.2.

This policy defines Laboratory requirements for application, maintenance, and termination of DOE security clearances for individuals associated with SLAC.
